Meticulously crafted from multiple hand-pierced layers of sterling silver, this exquisitely handmade silver pendant captures the striking and unique details of the beautiful Death’s Head Hawk Moth.
Resting upon a textured silver oval, her intricate details capture the delicate texture of the moth’s wings and antennae. Every element is hand pierced and hand engraved – from the tiny, detailed skull to the veins and patterns on her wings.
A creature of the night, she sits beneath an inverted reticulated silver crescent moon and is encircled by four 9ct gold stars. These are solid gold, not plate or vermeil.
She is is set with a stunning vintage mosaic opal triplet.
The pendant is shown with one of my 18″ sterling silver ‘Unity’ chains which is finished with my handmade fixings.
The silver has been darkened, or oxidised, to emphasise the texture and details. Oxidisation is a surface treatment that will lighten with wear. All oxidised areas are sealed with a layer of lacquer and waxed with a microcrystalline wax to help protect the oxidised surface.
As with all of my pieces, each and every jump ring is soldered closed to prevent any piece of the pendant coming apart or getting lost.
Death’s Head Hawk Moths have historically had a bad reputation because of the skull-like pattern on their thorax, but are actually both stunning and harmless. They can be found in the UK during the autumn, as they migrate north from Africa, and feed primarily on potato leaves, deadly nightshade and honey. Interestingly, they are able to raid hives of their honey by using a chemical camouflage to emit a smell that mimics the scent of the bees which helps them avoid detection!
