This stunning large bat necklace is inspired by the colony of brown long eared bats currently living in the porch of my son’s cottage.
Commonly known as the ‘whispering’ bat for its almost silent echolocation, or bio sonar, noises they are a medium-sized bat, growing to around 8cm in length, and are one of the most common bats in the UK.
With ears which are almost as long as their body, they have the ability to roll them back or hide them underneath their wings, when they rest.

My bat homage is handmade from multiple layers of meticulously hand pierced silver with hand soldered wing bones and hand engraved textures.
Even his cute little nose is cut by hand.
From his tiny feet hangs a gorgeous kite shaped blue moss checkerboard Kyanite.
This is a real statement piece which hangs from an 18″ long link paper clip style sterling silver chain which is detailed with a silver star and crescent moon, and is finished with a silver lobster clasp.
The silver has been oxidised and highlighted. Oxidisation is a surface treatment that can lighten with wear. I give all oxidised areas a coat of sealing lacquer and then microcrystalline wax to help protect the oxidised surface.
As with all of my pieces, each and every jump ring is soldered closed to prevent any piece of the pendant coming apart or getting lost.
