Small Penannular Silver Brooch

£52.00

Description

Penannular brooches began as utilitarian fasteners in the Iron Age and Roman period, but are especially associated with Celtic brooches produced in precious metal.
Penannular means formed as an incomplete ring and these brooches feature a long pin attached by its head to the ring. The pin can move freely around the ring as far as the terminals, which are close together but with a gap wide enough for the pin to pass through.
To use, the pin is pushed through folds of the open weave fabric, which are then pulled back inside the ring. The free end of the pin passes through the gap in the ring and the pin is then rotated around the ring by approximately 90 degrees.
I love the simplicity of this design which works so well at holding open weave fabric together. Perfect for woven scarves or cardigans.
